Domestic Lumber Down, Global Timber...

According to the CME, the lumber futures market for September closed down by apx 2.39 percent and November was down , lower at 1.57 percent. As housing starts remain sluggish, structural lumber supply inventories of SY pine lumber, doug-fir, and hem-fir may grow putting price pressure on lumber mills. This will also impact non-commodity items such as fencing, treated lumber and cedar lumber and composite decking. Some good news for hardwoods oak lumber, walnut lumber, and maple lumber was that the Commerce Department announced slight gains in durable goods (products that last 3 or more years). This category includes furniture. Finally, Wood Resources Int’l reported that Global trade of softwood logs has increased in 2010 after having fallen 30 percent in two years. This may be a turning point for global timber demand in the positive direction.
