Connecticut Officials Concerned About ALB Outbreaks

8 October 2008

An infestation of Asian longhorned beetles detected in Worchester MA in August has Connecticut officials scrambling to shift their detection programs and public education efforts away from port cities in the South to include the Northern border of the state. The Journal Inquirer reported today on these efforts, including a push to warn purchasers of firewood, training for town tree wardens, and etymological inspections to begin after leaf drop. The article notes that the Worchester infestation was detected and reported by a local resident, stressing the importance of community efforts to control the spread of the beetle.

Timber Royalties in Fiji Increase by 27%

3 October 2008

An increase in timber royalties has a number of mills halting their harvest operations, shifting exclusively to the timber stock in their yards. Meanwhile, the Fiji Sawmillers Association states that it will not accept this increase, and are attempting to reopen negotiations with the Native Land Trust Board. Concerns cited by industry include mill closures, and negative impacts on the local construction industry. The article also notes the potential for high grading as lower value species lose their export markets entirely due to competition from other Asian countries with lower material costs.

Pre-Cut Lumber Use In Japan - a look at softwood and hardwood lumber applications.
(Report summary to access the full report click here.)

In addition to residential housing, the pre-cut process is also a valuable application for the hardwood lumber and hardwood plywood industries. Pre-cut lumber provides customers with a product that translates into increased quality and ease of job site assembly. On the demand side, the popularity of precut systems has been driven by increased profit potential for builders. This potential comes from increased job site productivity and house quality.

Another advantage of precut components is their quality and precision. The machining done in pre-cut factories is of higher quality than components crafted by hand on the job site. The components fit snuggly together improving the structural quality of the house and reducing drafts that arise from loose fitting components. Furthermore, a majority of pre-cut components are kiln dried reducing the warping and twisting that occurs with green products. Other advantages include reduced job site noise, reduced construction times, and reduced claims. Precut systems have taken advantage of the total cost concept.
